What if European countries' Olympic medals were counted together?

Yet, on the official Olympic medal table of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the European Union is nowhere to be found. The IOC organizes medal counts by national delegation without taking into account country size and population, which has a considerable impact on medal rankings —which vary with different counting methods .

But it is striking to note that if europe were counted as a united entity, it would have been the big winner at the paris 2024 olympics. With a total of 309 medals —97 gold, 95 silver, and 117 bronze—the EU easily surpasses all other nations. By comparison, the United States earned 126 medals, including 40 gold, while China took home 91 medals, with 40 gold.

While the diversity of nations is culturally important to represent at the Olympics, we may wonder whether it's relevant to compare countries with a few million inhabitants, and others with several hundred million, or over a billion. At least, it would be inspiring for Europeans if the mainstream media reported on the number of medals that European countries have won together... or rather against each other?
